Starting Your Own Local Nerdy Meetup Group

Being called a “nerd” was once an insult, but now it’s a badge of honor. We are more embracing of nerd culture than ever with superhero movies like “The Avengers” franchise breaking records at the box office. If you have a particular nerdy interest that you want to enjoy with others, you should try these tips for starting a meetup group of your own.

Where to Meet

A strong meeting place is very important for any group. You can do it at your home, but it’s also good to find another place that lets everyone get out of their element. If you’re in college, you might hold it in a campus building that you don’t normally visit. You could also call your local comic book shop to see if they have facilities you can use for playing tabletop games. Many comic book shops also have game leagues of their own you could join with your friends. Wherever you decide to meet, make sure that you make arrangements well beforehand so that you aren’t rushing to find a space five minutes before your group is supposed to meet.

Getting the Word Out

You shouldn’t just limit your group to people already in your friend group. There’s almost always going to people who share your interests but who might not be in your circle. If you like going to comic conventions, get the word out there. Comic conventions are a great place to let people know about your group because they are usually full of people who have the same types of nerdy interests that you do. Social media can also be a great tool for getting the word out to people who are already your friends.

Keeping in Contact

Even if you decide on a set date and time for meetings, you should still be sending messages with some regularity. A group text message service of your choice can let you keep everyone in the loop. Group texts are often the fastest way to get ahold of the group as most smartphone users will check their text messages within minutes of delivery. You should also ask that any cancellations or special requests, such as bringing a new member, be made at least a day before a meeting.

Keeping the Group Active

There can be a lot of excitement for a group that just ends up fizzling. People might want to keep coming, but they might also not know how long the group leader intends to sustain it. Although you might have occasional hiccups, such as cancellations or times when you can’t make a meeting, there can always be a backup plan. For instance, you can still encourage the group to host meetings even when you’re not around. If you’re worried about participation and meeting attendance, convene with the other group members to decide what can be done.

Regular meetups with your group mean that everyone will have something to look forward to. You can cherish the camaraderie of your fellow group members and find yourself more in love with your hobby.
