Musical Brain Surgery

Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. Sadly I’ve dropped off between Days 83 and 121, and then again from 121 to 208. It’s hard keeping this daily writing thing up, but I’m very proud of the writing I’ve done this year. In my 208th entry, I’ll be talking about pulling through the brain surgery that I wrote about on DAY 121, and then I’ll be talking about how music affects me.

As you can see from the image above, I made it through the brain surgery, with a less than impressive scar. Ever since May 6, 2019… I have felt so much better, infinitely better than I have in years. We all have fluid on our brains, but I had excess fluid building on my brain. When they did the CT Scans, and the MRI… it showed that my brain was pushing against my skull from this excess fluid. Luckily the surgery that they did was just draining the excess fluid off my brain. I’ve had headaches all my life, but the 6 months prior to the surgery, they had gotten infinitely worse. Since the surgery, I’ve had maybe 10 headaches in almost three months. They normally happen on a Wednesday for some odd reason, and usually every two weeks in between each Wednesday. Most of the time I am pain free now with no headaches to report. Well that’s in the brain department, the rest of my body is a complete dumpster fire.

The reason why Day 208 is entitled Musical Brain Surgery is recently a friend suggested a new podcast for me to listen to. It’s called the MUSIC TALKS PODCAST! The show is hosted by Terry Smith, and the format is a simple, yet elegant one. You pick 1 song per decade of your life and then talk about each song, and why you chose it. I’ve listened to the first three episodes, and I’ve really enjoyed them. Terry is a wonderful interviewer, and the chemistry he has with his guests is fantastic.

As you may or may not know, I’ve been a podcaster for 11 years as of this December, and as of this past AJune… The GeekCast Radio Network has been online for 10 years. I’ve learned so much in the time for podcasting, I have always said that I’m a PODCAST MACHINE! Yet as I get older, I find I can’t sit and record, edit, or anything else for hours anymore. When my depression hits me, I’ll often say, “Well 11 years was a good run of podcasting.” You might be reading this and thinking to yourself, but TFG1Mike… what does this have to do with music or brain surgery? Well it has everything to do with Music, the Brain, the Heart, and the Soul.

You see music hits us all in different ways. The way I view music is that if you can’t get a song out of your head, it’s effecting your brain. If you are emotional about a song, no matter why you are emotional about it, that’s effecting your heart, and when you hear a song that effects you so much… it’s as if it reaches right into your soul, well that’s a soul effected song. I’m 6-7 months away from my 40th birthday, that’s 4 decades of being influenced by music. The funny thing is because of my parents, and other family members and friends, I’ve been exposed to more music than just what’s in the four decades I’ve been alive. When I’m writing, I have to have music blaring in my headphones, no matter what the song is, I need that sound in order to connect to my thoughts of whatever it is that I’m writing. Right now Joe Diffie’s John Deere Green is at full blast, yes I’m weird, but that was the next track in my Faves playlist.

Music is a motivator for me, every time I have things to do around the house, whether that be cleaning or any other projects, I have my phone in my pocket full blast to whatever is on my faves playlist. These are songs I wanna hear all the time no matter what. Sadly immediately after the brain surgery, there was no song on my list that I could listen to, because I had to focus on not moving so much. You see when they drain fluid off your brain, they leave a drain in your head. So besides the scar you see in the picture above, I also had a second hole in my head for the drain. I just wanted to sleep the entire time, I had been in the hospital for 2 and a half days, and I think I only turned the TV on once for 5 mins or less. Music and a few audiobooks are what I was using to get through the waking hours after surgery. They were tones in the background though, not my normal way of actively listening to music.

I’m definitely a listener versus being a performer. I took music class in elementary school, but I never could play any instrument, and I have no singing voice at all. I’m perfectly fine with that, because my art is writing. Whenever I end up guesting on Terry’s podcast, I have no idea what my song choices will be. Besides mainstream music, I also have a love for television, film, animation, and video game scores. Who knows what direction I’ll go in…? I hope I have given you some insights into how music effects me. And hey I survived brain surgery yay. Join me tomorrow as I’ll be writing something… I think… I’m not sure yet.
