TFG1MIKE 365 – 2019 Day 43

WWF-WWE and Me!

Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. In my 43rd entry, I’ll be talking about Wrestling!

For the past 4 years I’ve been running the GCRN and TWIG collaborative wrestling podcast MAYHEM MICS! It was an idea Mike “The Birdman” Dodd of This Week in Geek and I came up with. The idea had been stewing since about 2011. April 6, 2015 e kicked it off by discussing WWE Wrestlemania 31. You can listen to that first episode HERE!

I grew up in the 80s watching WWF. Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, Junkyard Dog, and many others were my favorites. It’s something I would do with my Dad. I think, but I might be remembering this wrong, we also watched with my grandmother on my Dad’s side. The crazy thing is looking at old episodes of Monday Night RAW on the WWE Network, I guess I wasn’t watching then anymore. Because I don’t remember Vince and Macho Man doing the commentating. Hell in the 80s whenever I would watch, I barely remember who was on the commentators team then. What I do remember is the wrestlers and MEAN GENE!

If I’m remembering this right, which I’m probably not… I stopped watching WWF around the time of the monday night wars between raw and nitro. Yeah crazy I know right? Well my life was changing at that time, and wrestling on TV was the furthest thing from my mind. I did pick it back up around 1996 through 2001. Just in time for the Attitude Era with The Undertaker, Stone Cold, Kurt Angle, Booker T, and the rest of them. I dropped out around late 2001, and didn’t pick it back up until 2007 with Wrestlemania 23. I’ve been continually watching since 2007, but I have to say… I’m getting fed up. So there’s my history in watching WWF-WWE.

Back in 2007 when Wrestlemania 23 hit, I was still a DIRECTV subscriber, and I was paying for the pay per views as they came out. Back then I had a good paying job, so I could fit the cost within my budget. Thankfully WWE came up with a much better option than paying $30-$90 for each Pay per view. The WWE Network is awesome! For just $9.99 you can watch the company’s entire catalog whenever you want! As I said eariler it has been four years since Mayhem Mics started, and lately… I want to end the podcast.

The reason why is that WWE has become boring to me. I watch RAW and SmackDown Live every week, and most of the time I like maybe 2 matches out of the 5 hours of content. 5 hours of Wrestling on TV per week times 52 weeks a year… That’s A LOT of wrestling television content, and it can get monotonous. Every year for the past four years Wrestlemania has been a 7 hour or more piece of content. Between the kickoff show at 2 hours, and then the main show at 4 hours, plus the Hall of Fame stuff… A person can get burnt out on all that after awhile.

However I do love seeing certain wrestlers, and I respect these people for what they put their bodies through… In order to entertain, not just me, but the entire world. John Cena, The Shield, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, Bayley, Jeff Hardy, Samoa Joe, and AJ Styles are just a few of the current roster that I enjoy watching. What bugs me about the WWE content has nothing to do with the athletics and the athletes. It has to do with creative, and some of the choices they make. Case in point is this whole Bevky Charlotte vs Ronda thing. I get it, Becky might be injured, but WWE is notorious about doing storylines like this that are a work. It is something that makes us fans enraged, and honestly I was thinking of not even watching Wrestlemania after this happened. We saw the Ronda/Charlotte match already, I want to see Becky Vs Ronda dammit!

Are you a Wrestling Fan in general? Are you a WWF-WWE fan? Or do you prefer other Wrestling promotions? When did you start, stop, or continue watching wrestling? Let me know in the comments below!

Join me tomorrow morning February 13, 2019 as I’ll be writing about the first special look at the live action Aladdin film.
